The request from private citizens came as Americans have found themselves stranded as a result of heightened travel restrictions and border closures due to COVID-19.

The number of confirmed cases in the U.S. is doubling approximately every three days. The U.S. has the second-most active cases behind Italy.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the governors of California and New York announced a statewide order for all residents to stay at home except for essential needs.
