COVID-19 Update: U.S. Cases Pass 1.5 Million

The drugmaker Moderna out of Cambridge, Massachusetts announced that their coronavirus vaccine appears to be safe and able to stimulate an immune response against the COVID-19 virus. The initial results are from testing performed on eight volunteers. The second phase involving 600 people will begin soon and is on an accelerated timeline.

COVID-19 Update: States Begin Lifting Restrictions

New York governor Andrew Cuomo announced a two-week extension of stay-at-home orders for parts of the state, including NYC, that do not meet certain criteria laid out by the state. Five regions of New York were cleared to reopen some non-essential businesses; the Finger Lakes, including Rochester; Central New York, a five-county area including Syracuse; the Southern Tier, which borders Pennsylvania; the Mohawk Valley, west of Albany; and the rural North County, which includes the Adirondack Mountains.

COVID-19 Update: New Cases Spiking in Brazil and Russia

There are nearly 1.3 million cases in the U.S.

  • The death toll from COVID-19 stands at 77,000 in the U.S. There were more than 4,500 deaths recorded in the last 48 hours. 
     
  • According to Labor Department statistics, more than 20 million jobs were lost in April. The unemployment rate now stands at 14.7 percent. More than 33 million people have filed unemployment insurance claims since the pandemic-driven lockdown began in mid-March. 

  • In Pennsylvania, the stay-at-home order was extended to 04 June for "red" counties with high rates of COVID-19 infections. Businesses in "yellow" counties will be allowed to re-open with some restrictions starting 08 May.

COVID-19 Update: U.S. Sees 4.8 Percent GDP Drop

The U.S. now accounts for one-third of total global cases with over 1,000,000 while the global total has surpassed 3,000,000. While much of Europe has "flattened the curve" or seen consistent declines in new cases, other countries are seeing explosive case growth, including Brazil, Russia, Turkey, Mexico, and Peru.
