New York governor Andrew Cuomo announced a two-week extension of stay-at-home orders for parts of the state, including NYC, that do not meet certain criteria laid out by the state. Five regions of New York were cleared to reopen some non-essential businesses; the Finger Lakes, including Rochester; Central New York, a five-county area including Syracuse; the Southern Tier, which borders Pennsylvania; the Mohawk Valley, west of Albany; and the rural North County, which includes the Adirondack Mountains.

The number of daily new cases recorded in the U.S. has been slowly trending down over the last four days, largely due to significant declines in new cases in New York City, Detroit, and New Orleans. 

The death toll from COVID-19 passed 80,000 in the U.S. on 11 May. There are more than 1,000,000 active cases in the U.S.

Death Toll Passes 70,000 Mark in U.S.

The U.S. now accounts for one-third of total global cases with over 1,000,000 while the global total has surpassed 3,000,000. While much of Europe has "flattened the curve" or seen consistent declines in new cases, other countries are seeing explosive case growth, including Brazil, Russia, Turkey, Mexico, and Peru. 

On 25 April, the U.S. tallied 39,000 new cases over the previous 24-hours, the largest one-day increase in new cases on record for the country. Total cases will surpass one million before the end of today. New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Illinois, California, and Pennsylvania are the hardest hit states by total cases.

Job Losses Continue as House Passes Relief Bill

• The U.S. Labor Department reported on 23 April that another 4.4 million people filed initial unemployment claims last week, bringing the five-week total to more than 26 million. Nearly one in six American workers has lost a job in recent weeks.

States begin lifting restrictions:

• Georgia governor Brian Kemp indicated that some businesses - including gyms, barbers and nail salons - can reopen starting from 24 April. On 27 April, restaurants and theaters will be allowed to reopen. The governor also confirmed that the stay-at-home order in place in Georgia will expire on 30 April as originally planned.
